PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This program will increase student awareness of the relationships between technology and society. These relationships will not just be discussed in class, but also experienced first-hand through the meetings and excursions while in-country in South Africa. The program will focus on examining the appropriateness of technologies for sustainability in South Africa. Students will examine how technologies affect the well-being of the South African nation and people. While the effects of many technologies will be studied, emphasis will be placed on renewable energy technologies including: solar thermal, photovoltaic, and biogas generation technologies.
Students will actively participate in a community development project to provide either domestic hot water or cooking gas from a renewable source to Lebone Land, an orphanage for children whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS. The time in country will provide experience with processes and materials used to implement renewable energy technologies in developing nations, and exposure to the difficulty in completing a project without all of the resources typically available in the U.S. Students will also be exposed to the culture, as well as the socio-economic problems that citizens of South Africa face. Comparisons will be made of actual daily life and foreigners' perceptions of tourist areas, metropolitan areas, and rural villages.
