Rwanda - Field Study in Society and Technology
Not available at this time please check at a later date
This course provides a hands-on field experience for students to learn first-hand the connection between society and technology in a developing country. The focus of this year's class will be a newly completed cassava processing facility, a business development initiative that is operated by a community cooperative. We will be working with Rwandan student and faculty counterparts on site, following the cassava from the field through the facility, and collecting data on inputs (cassava, energy, water) and outputs (flour, waste water, waste solids) with the goal of advancing water treatment and use and possible options for biomass fuel (e.g. briquettes, biogas) production from solid waste and the starch in the wastewater. We will interact with the surrounding community to assess possible synergies with community water and energy needs. On-site water testing will be conducted, and results will be a key determinant in technology recommendations. Visits to cultural sites and interaction with local University students and rural farmers will broaden understanding of Rwanda's recent tragic history and the heart of her people as they make a new beginning for their children. Group will meet at ASU for classes prior to departure.
Cost: $4000
