PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This two-week program will focus on sustainable development projects and the installation of renewable energy systems at the Finca Esperanza Verde coffee farm, ecolodge, and private forest reserve. This unique off-grid farm serves as an excellent laboratory to investigate possibilities for self-sufficiency in energy, food production, resource management, and education to surrounding communities and visitors alike. We will visit Nicaraguan families, the University of Matagalpa, learn about the flora and fauna, the culture of the region, and explore the political landscape and environmental issues that define Nicaragua. Several visits will be made to community-based sustainable development programs in the region. We will also spend three nights in the colonial town of Granada, visit Lake Nicaragua, and the Pacific coast.
